TREMENDOUS LAMB TRADE YET AGAIN

An increased entry of prime sheep at Lancaster was gratefully received by all buyers with several orders looking for lambs to kill as soon as possible.  Despite the fact that lambs fell from last Monday onwards, Lancaster’s trade this week was right back up to average an excellent 276p/kg with medium weight lambs averaging 280p/kg.  A top price of 323p/kg went to Andrew Butler, Parks Farm Barn for 39kg Texel bred purchased for £126 per head by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Ltd of Diggle.  Lambs also sold to a top of £129 per head twice, firstly for Charollais x from S Wilson & Son, Burrow Heights which were purchased by Lancaster Meat Company and then again for Charollais x from AG Butler, Parks Farm Barn this time bought by Whittakers Butchers of Blackburn.  

A very small entry of prime hoggs topped at £110 for Suffolk x from TS & B Baines, Castle O’Trim.  

A reduced entry of cast ewes were in great demand once again.  Ewes average £86 per head and sold to a top of £137 for Texels from B & J Preston, Ellers Farm.  Many more ewes are required every Monday morning.  

In the prime cattle section an excellent entry of 35 prime bulls were a very pleasing trade to average 156p/kg for all breeds.  A top price of 188.5p/kg went to TH & D Cornthwaite, Low Tarn Green for a Belgian Blue and this was purchased by Blacklidge Bros., Chorley.  Bulls also sold to £1107.80 per head to Blacklidge Bros. again for a Belgian Blue this time from JM & AG Swarbrick, Bensons Farm.   A smaller entry of prime butchers heifers averaged 173p/kg topping at 193.5p/kg to JA & J Harper, Capplethwaite Hall for a Limousin heifer purchased by Roy Schofield on behalf of Samuel Howarth Ltd.
