GOOD BANK HOLIDAY SALE AT LANCASTER

Whilst Bank Holiday weeks cause problems for the abattoir sector, the Bank Holiday sales every Monday at Lancaster always seem to go well.  This week another improved entry of 814 spring lambs met a dearer trade on the week to average almost 235p/kg.  All lambs across the board were dearer with handy weight lambs up to 40 kilos generally selling to a premium.  The top price lambs of the sale went for the second week running to ME Wannop & Sons, Heaton Hall whose 38kg Texel lambs made 266p/kg, £101.  These were purchased by Michael Lomax.  The top price per head for Spring lambs was £107 to J Raby & Sons, Bracken Lea and these were purchased by Fairfield Meat Company Ltd, Wrexham.

A very small entry of hoggs topped at £111 for Texel x from Ted Parker, Marsh House Farm.

An improved entry of cast ewes continue to sell very well on a Monday and it is surprising that more ewes are not forward at this trade.  A top price of £111 went to AG Butler, Parks Farm Barn.

In the prime cattle ring yet again best butchers cattle were in much demand.  Ambrose Rayton, Winston Farm topped the trade at 193.5p/kg for a Limousin heifer which was purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth butchers of Diggle.  The same buyer also purchased a similar heifer at 188.5p/kg also from Mr Rayton.

A reduced entry of prime bulls were a better trade than expected topping at 169.5p/kg for a British Blue from JA Gardner, Moss House Farm.
