Posted Friday, 01 October 2010, 12.17pm

North West Auctions Lancaster Mart held their Annual Prize Show & Sale of Store Bullocks last Friday.

Yet another superb entry of 608 store cattle included a tremendously strong entry of bullocks and heifers. The sale also included 100 cast cows and heifers together with 55 calves and 60 store lambs.

The prize show was kindly sponsored by the Farmers Guardian and the prize judging was in the hands of Mr Frank Towers of Wray Near Lancaster who hardly misses a sale throughout the year at Lancaster. Championship honours were awarded to Messrs JJ & D Huddleston, Overhouses for a fantastic pen of 4 Belgian Blue x bullocks which went on to sell for £920 and were bought by the judge.

The continued large entry every Friday at Lancaster is attracting more and more buyers each week and it was good to see a number of new faces around the ring yet again. Trade, against expectations was rather dearer on the week with store bullocks of all classes averaging £781 per head and store heifers averaging £725 per head. These are possibly the best sale average for some time. The top price of the day was £1140 for a pen of Charolais bullocks from WS Burrow & Son, Gibraltar Farm. Heifers topped at £960 from Messrs JT & A Armitstead, Bouthwaite Farm.

Another excellent entry of cast cows as always found meat very good to sell. The top price of 117.5p/kg was given to DM Bargh, Bradlow Farm for Charolais x cows. Meaty black & whites were in much demand selling to a top of 109.5p/kg from TD Inman, Milton Moor Farm. Clean heifers sold to 121.5p/kg from T & M Halhead for a Limousin heifer and OTM Bullocks also sold to 121.5p/kg for a Belgin Blue again from Mr Bargh, Bradlow.

Limousin Heifer from C & N Shearing with bulls topping at £385 for British Blue Bulls from JW & TE Sharp. Beef calves were as always in demand.
